Band and Choir Travel to San Diego

March 12, 2024

The CDH Band and Choir headed to San Diego March 1-4 for a memorable trip that included performances, learning opportunities and exploring the city together. Delilah Schuster, CDH Choir Director, and Nick Zahler, CDH Band Director, led 42 students on the trip with the help of 5 chaperones.

For Becca Gutzmann ‘24, a flutist in the band, the trip was a chance to connect with classmates in a way that isn't always possible during regular school days. "I love trips like these because I can get closer to so many other people that I don’t see as often," she shared. The journey transformed separate classes into one cohesive group.

One of the highlights of the trip was the opportunity to perform and learn from experts in the field. Clinics with faculty members at Point Loma Nazarene University provided feedback on musical technique, enhancing the students' skills and confidence. Dr. Bruce Mansfield, in particular, left a lasting impression with his passion for music and unique insights into performance. "Each person approaches a song uniquely," Becca remarked, reflecting on the diverse perspectives shared by conductors and teachers.

The trip wasn’t all about music, though. The students also had the chance to explore San Diego and its many attractions. From visits to the San Diego Zoo and museums at Balboa Park to strolls along the Mission Beach Boardwalk and a dinner cruise, there was never a dull moment. Despite the slightly chilly low 60’s weather, many students swam in the outdoor pool or dipped their toes into the Pacific Ocean, taking advantage of the opportunity to experience the California coast.

Parent chaperones played a vital role in ensuring the smooth execution of the itinerary and the students' positive attitudes and enthusiasm made this trip enjoyable for everyone. Delilah Schuster, the choir director, expressed gratitude to both the chaperones and students, emphasizing their role as ambassadors of Cretin-Derham Hall.

"The trip was both a fun vacation and a way to get closer to my friends and the music I play," said Gutzman. Ms. Schuster agreed that it was a successful trip, saying “So much fun and music was packed into this short trip... we already can't wait for the next tour!"
